- COWBOY PALS

- There's times a man gets
lonely
- just followin' the herd,
- an' times he needs
companionship,
- tho' that might seem absurd
-
- But when ya got a cowboy pal
- as great as my friend Jake,
- you'll never be blind-sided,
- an' you'll laugh for goodness
sake
-
- Ol' Jake can see the funny
- in almost anything,
- fightin', bustin' broncos,
- or a deerfly when it stings
-
- An' when things ain't so
funny,
- he'll be there in a pinch
- helpin' out as best he can
- ta tighten up my cinch
-
- I reckon I could even bawl,
- if life took a real bad turn,
- an' Jake would be there for me
- showin' nothin' but concern
-
- He'd watch my back in trouble
- he knows I'd do the same,
- if anyone looked threatenin',
- their attitude he'd change
-
- Ya see we've been together
- in every sorta trial,
- shot up small town barrooms,
- cuddled ladies for awhile
-
- We've drank ourselves half
silly,
- an' woke up in such pain
- run outdoors to soothe our
heads
- by standin' in the rain
-
- So many years we've shared the
trail
- an' ate food offa tin,
- fought weather an' most renegades
- just took life on the chin
-
- But now our days are numbered,
- who'll be the first to go
- the other just keep movin' on
- like the rivers flow?
-
- Which will lay a posy
- upon the other's grave,
- an' take with him fond
memories
- to cherish an' to save?
-
- God only knows the answer,
- no one can speculate
- me or Jake left standin',
- on that day we're gonna hate
-
- 'Cause cowboy pals like us are
rare,
- an' I'd bet a whole month's
pay,
- Jake'd say these words o're
me
- "Was a good man in his day."
