"FINE"
I DIDN’T KNOW
THE WORD FINE HAD SO MANY MEANINGS UNTIL I LOOKED IN THE
DICTIONARY.
THE DICTIONARY
LISTED THESE MEANINGS.
1. OF SUPERIOR
QUALITY.
2. MOST
ENJOYABLE.
3. SHARP.
4. CONSISTING OF
EXTREMELY SMALL PARTICLES.
5. SUBTLE OR
PRECISE.
6. OF REFINED
MANNERS.
7. HAVING NO
CLOUDS.
8. QUITE WELL.
9. A SUM OF
MONEY IMPOSED AS A PENALTY.
BUT THE
DICTIONARY DOESN’T LIST ALL THE MEANINGS OF THE WORD FINE.
JOHNNIE HAS SOME OF HER OWN.
FOR INSTANTS
WHEN WE ARE SITTING IN THE DEN AFTER SUPPER AND I’M TRYING
TO TELL HER SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED TO ME WHEN I WAS TWELVE
YEARS OLD. I’M HALF WAY THROUGH A SENTENCE WHEN SHE SAYS
“FINE” AND REACHES OVER, PICKS UP THE TV REMOTE CONTROL AND
CLICKS ON THE TV. I NEVER DO FINISH MY SENTENCE. BUT
THAT’S A WHOLE NOTHER STORY FOR A DIFFERENT TIME.
10. IGNORE.
MY HUNTING AND
FISHING BUDDY, PAT STOPPED BY AND WE WERE IN MY OFFICE
TALKING.. HE HAD BOUGHT A NEW RIFLE AND WANTED TO GO TO THE
GUN CLUB AND TRY IT OUT. I TELL JOHNNIE THAT PAT AND I ARE
GOING TO THE GUN CLUB. SHE SAYS, “THAT’S FINE.”
11. DON’T CARE.
WHEN JOHNNIE AND
I ARE HAVING A HEATED DISCUSSION ABOUT SOMETHING (OK AN
ARGUMENT), THEN THERE IS THE “FINE” IN A VERY LOUD AND
COARSE VOICE WITH ICICLES DRIPPING OFF IT. THAT ENDS THE
ARGUM … ER DISCUSSION.
12. WATCH IT
BUSTER.
WHEN I GET THIS
NUMBER 12 “FINE” I KNOW IT’S TIME TO RETREAT AND I RUN FOR
MY OFFICE AND SHUT THE DOOR. THEN I START PECKING AWAY AT
THE KEY BOARD ON MY COMPUTER. IT’S BEST TO STAY OUT OF
JOHNNIES SIGHT FOR A FEW HOURS.
