~ Green Is Not Me Enemy~ |
"Photographs of Ireland"
Picture"
Green is not my enemy
it is one of my
hearts best friends,
For it teases and
tantalizes my spirit
and takes me way back
to where and when.
Where: was County
Cork, Ireland
When: was exodus of
clan folks during potato blight,
How: was a ship
headed toward the US
for a new life's hope
delight.
Now: being a 3rd
generation descendant down
with roots planted
firmly inU.S. soil,
I`ve so long wondered
if name Coffey
were just a figment
of Daddys
imagination story boils.
Aye, e tole me as a
wee one
I were fermented in
an Irish cabbage patch,
Where kin clansmen
did a toe dancin jig ditty
on Saturday nights,
n` none's dwelling held a latch.
E say: Sherry me
Sweet Darling
ye ere of tha Royal
Ancestery
as ye are a root "O"
the mystery Isle
where all folks love
n` smile constantly.
Then e told me of the
Dancin Leprechauns
n` tha Cork`s kissing
stone,
E then says, Lass
yere past is filled wid merriment
n`yere a creature of
the blarney blatherin home.
Oh, how I laughed and
I giggled
with his many heart
warming tale spiels,
Sometimes as I grew
older, I`d wonder
if t`were naught a
touch "O" his liquor reels.
Yet, when he spoke
"O" tha time "O" his grandfolks leavin
tha Cork port, I`d
see on his cheek a tear,
He`d speak "O" tha
fields in a near whisper
n` his rendition of:
"I`ll Take Ye Back
Home A`gin Katleen
n`was sung much like
a reverent prayer.
Na, Green is not me
enemy
tis me avenue of
touching me ancestral roots,
It`s also a recall
avenue of laughter's funny bones boosting
when I close my eyes
and remember his pet name of
" My Little Irish
Toots"
