The
clear blue sky reached further
than my eyes could see,
like it
was padding the world from
harm,
The sun
shone down upon the mid summer
ground,
filling
us full of a lazy day's charm.
You
could hear the laughter of
children playing,
and the
music floating upon the
breeze,
The dogs
barking and boats roaring,
while we
all waited for the ice-cream
to freeze.
There
was ice cold watermelons
sliced just right,
hamburgers and hotdogs on the
grill,
Screams
from the water and sighs from
the audience,
when the
skiers would take a spill.
While
the adults hurried to prepare
the festive meal,
one by
one the children began to
disappear,
Then
just before dark they gathered
together,
and they
put on a show filled with
patriotic tears.
They had
tied Old Glory to a borrowed
pole,
and got
help to raise her high,
Then
they recited the Pledge of
Allegiance,
while
the adults would stand in awe
and cry.
Even the
children had a surprise in
store,
when a
small plane flew low overhead,
Dropping
streamers of red, white and
blue,
the
pilot was an old Navy man we
know as Ed.
Then the
whole park stood an sang,
The Star
Spangled Banner with pride,
Not one
person moved and inch,
Even the
oldest men sang, while the
women cried.
The two
oldest girls gathered their
horns,
and on a
makeshift stage they stood
tall,
And
together they played the Echo
of Taps,
while
chills ran down the spine of
all.
By then
night had fallen on the skies,
the
stars were shining bright,
Starbursts of color filled
it's space,
everything just seemed so
right.
I was
one of those that thought our
children,
was
absent of a patriotic eye,
But
through all the smiles and
patriotic tears,
they
gave us a memorable and
unforgettable
Fourth
of July.
